Randomised clinical trials use a number of scientific methods attached to statistical planning, randomisation, data handling, communication, data analyses, and data management. These methods, developed and refined especially during the last 120 years (see The James Lind Library and Testing Treatments), are supported by a technology in rapid growth.
Internationally, there is an ongoing process of technological development within randomisation, data transmission, communication, and dissemination of the results.
